#42 Emma Sievers [Truths about Mental Illness]
Emma is a 22-year-old blogger, speaker and school psychology graduate student from Wisconsin. Her goal is to tell the stories that God has put on her heart so that other people can find hope and encouragement from them. She firmly believes in the power of shared experiences and telling people your story.
Today on the show Emma walks us through not one, but two nearly fatal car accidents she was involved in. The second causing a brain injury that led Emma to suffer from anxiety, depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Emma shares that she had a hard time understanding why God would allow this to happen twice, but she as time passes she’s able to look back and say, “something good has come out of every situation that God has put me in. I hope and pray you can trust that the setbacks God has put in your life are there for good.”
Emma talks about how she had a strong relationship with God, but how she was made to feel like her mental illness was a result of not having enough faith or because she had done something wrong. She tells us it took her a while to stop feeling shame about her situation. Her main message for anyone with similar struggles is that your illness is not a sin and that it is okay to get help. Emma credits her heavenly father, counseling and medication for the progress she’s made and for how much better she’s feeling.
